Training Ourselves In Good Habits

an exceedingly good servant
or a very bad master,
known as Habit.”

Our Words Shape Our Homes

For a few short years, what she says, IS!
She shapes reality for the entire family via her tongue."

Firm, Consistent, Watchful, Kind, Loving

"We cannot impart to our children new hearts, but we can see to it that there shall be nothing within our gates that is derogatory to the Gospel of the Jesus Christ.

But you cannot control your children, you say. Then the Lord have mercy on you! It is your business to do it, and you must do it, or else you will soon find they will control you.

No one knows what judgment will come from God upon those who allow sin in children to go unrebuked."

~Charles H. Spurgeon
(1834-1892)

They Look To Us...

"Who is the queen in Babyland?
Mother, kind and sweet;
And her love, born above,
Guides the little feet."

Keep Anger Out of Your Voice ~ Poem

It’s not so much what you say
As the manner in which you say it;
It’s not so much the language you use
As the tone in which you convey it;
“Come here!” I sharply said,
And the child cowered and wept.
“Come here,” I said-
He looked and smiled
And straight to my lap he crept.

Words may be mild and fair
And the tone may pierce like a dart;
Words may be soft as the summer air
But the tone may break my heart;
For words come from the mind
Grow by study and art-
But tone leaps from the inner self
Revealing the state of the heart.

Whether you know it or not,
Whether you are mean or care,
Gentleness, kindness, love and hate,
Envy, anger, are there.
Then, would you quarrels avoid
And peace and love rejoice?
Keep anger not only out of your words-
Keep it out of your voice.

A Joyful Vision

"Oh, that God would give every mother a vision of the glory and splendor of the work that is given to her when a babe is placed in her bosom to be nursed and trained!

Could she have but one glimpse in to the future of that life as it reaches on into eternity; could she look into its soul to see its possibilities, could she be made to understand her own personal responsibility for the training of this child, for the development of its life, and for its destiny,

~she would see that in all God's world there is no other work so noble and so worthy of her best powers, and she would commit to no others hands the sacred and holy trust given to her."

~J.R. Miller
The Family
1882

Lord, Mold Me...

"A mother can read all the child-rearing books and can subscribe to any theory of parenting, but what gets passed along to her children is something far more intimate and mysterious than anything contained therein.
What gets passed along is her character, and it enters into her kids as surely and as inexorably as water flows from a fuller vessel into a less-full one."

Give Them Your Ears

"You earn the right to listen to
his thoughts on who he might marry,
by listening to the story about his frog."

A Mother's Midnight Prayer

Lord, Help me remember, when I feel it's a chore
the time will come when I'll hold her no more
asleep on my chest, the crib refused
the blanket, the pacifier, gone unused.
What better place is there to lay her head
than against my heart, my arms her bed?

For infants grow up and leave us behind
with only memories left to remind
us of midnight walking and predawn rocking,
of soft, helpless babies unable to sleep.

So, Lord, make me patient and keep me awake
while I cradle this child, and don't let me take
for granted the moments I spend in the night
with this ~ Your gift, my joy, my delight.

~Jan Dunlap

Attention is a Virtue

"By the way we parent, we train
our children to have obedient ears ~
Or, disobedient ears, lazy ears, dull ears, defiant ears,
resistant ears, gullible ears or even forgetful ears.
What kind of ears are you training your children to have?
When you ask them to do something,
but they take no notice of you,
you are training them to have defiant ears.
When you ask them to do something,
but they delay doing it, they have dull ears.
When you ask them to do something,
but they don't bother doing it until you have asked for the sixth time,
and by now you are shouting, you are telling them
that they do not have to obey until the sixth time!
You are producing lazy ears.
What will God have to do to get their attention?"

~Nancy Campbell

Mom's Habits = Kids Learning

Evening Prayers by Eugene Hillemacher

"Yes, it will take effort to cultivate that good habit. And here is where your children will benefit from your experience.

Your victories, struggles, temptations, and progress will offer a prime opportunity to show your children what it means to depend upon God while putting forth personal effort. They need to learn this principle!"

Richness of Reading Together

Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be -
I had a mother who read to me."

How to Be A Hero to Your Kids

Send Your Children to Bed with a Kiss

Oh, mothers, so weary, discouraged,
Worn out with the cares of the day,

You often grow cross and impatient,
Complain of the noise and the play.

For the day brings many vexations,
So many things go amiss.

But, mothers, whatever may vex you,
Send the children to bed with a kiss.

The dear little feet often wander,
Perhaps from the pathways of right.

The dear little hands find new mischief
To try you from morning 'til night.

But think of the desolate mothers
Who'd give all the world for your bliss.

And as thanks for your infinite blessings,
Send the children to bed with a kiss.

For some day their noise will not vex you.
The silence will hurt you far more.

You will long for the sweet childish voices,
For a sweet childish face at the door.

And to press a child's face to your bosom,
You'd give all the world just for this.

For the comfort t'will give you in sorrow,
Send the children to bed with a kiss...

A Mother's Influence

“The formative period for building character
for eternity is in the nursery.
The mother is queen of that realm
and sways a scepter more potent
than that of kings or priests.”
